Thanks a lot for the extremely helpful reviews. Browsing on TT’s. I guess you’re in the USA? With this set up, which cables would I need and how many of each? As a student, I would guess that you’re near the ‘Saving money’ side of affairs To make the most out of your limited budget, one that will allow you to upgrade in the future and one that will stop you dumping your proposed purchases later on and starting all over again, I would concentrate on buying the best source you possibly can. In summary, I’m pretty much settled on the Planar 3 and Concept 20 speakers. https://theaudiophileman.com/800ne-amp-cd-network-denon-news/ I have yet to get too close to it but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that it’s a decent/solid unit. You can plug the Rega directly into the Cambridge, into the sockets marked ‘phono’. Correct way to go? Now I enjoy the music 4 hours every day. And that brings me to today. For that price, either a NAD D3020 or it might be wise to head off to Japan and possibly an Onkyo model. Many thanks for the advice Paul. I feel like my RP1 is the bottleneck but I’m not sure if the other pieces are up to the same level at this stage. So with a budget of circa £250 would it make more sense to buy a second hand Rega 2 or 3, or is a new P1 an improvement on an older, but higher range Rega? Tried a bunch of fresh records today, And they all sounded extremely satisfying with good bass mids and treble extensions. Hi Paul – I am finding your site very useful and informative. Regards, Check out my accessories section for the sort of thing I mean, cables too of course. When you get to this upgrade stage, if you need help, give me a shout. I take on board what you have said about separating the systems so am now looking to do just that – sneaking it in past the wife will be the fun part ! I was thinking around €600-700 (i’m from Belgium). The Denon sound can be quite hard in tone too, be aware of that. This should be fine then Tim. Planar 1 This multi-award winning ‘Plug and Play’ design utilises our handmade RB110 tonearm, with pre-set bias and a factory fitted Carbon cartridge. best regards, Hi Paul it’s Ben again, I’m just setting up the phono amp to the amplifier, using the QED Performance Graphite Audio Cable you recommended. Great review! (Only Flac + Kodo software), Hi Paul. Reading about the anti-skate measures put in place for this Rega Carbon gives me pause about just picking up any cartridge and I’m wondering if I should just stick to the original if I’ve been satisfied. Changes have been made to the tonearm itself which has been designed specifically for this turntable and will only ever be seen on this turntable. I agree that a £200-£300 integrated amp and £200 speakers with good quality cables is probably a better option at this point. & should I set the level / earth dials a particular way? Powered speakers for your budget or amp and separate speakers? My only other options appears to be a Project jukebox E but I understand that the inbuilt amp generates noise so possible not as good ? Not a problem – what sort of budget are you looking at KT? Rega Planar 1+ONKYO-A-9110+Q3020i. Have you asked Rega’s customer support for confirmation? I’ve been looking for the Planar 1 or the Planar 2. (2) If so, would you go for Rega’s own Mini-Fono preamp or is there another option in the £100-150 price range that would work well with the above? If sound is the main thing, go for the 3020i. Do not have preamp, but concerning a Vincent Audio PHO-701. The rest is a Planar 3, a Rega Apollo CD player, a C. Audio phono preamp 551 p and a pair of Spica TC 60 speakers (pretty vintage since they are about 23 yrs old). Brian. And yes, I’m glad you like the Rega. An external model reduces electrical contamination and lowers the noise to reveal more detail. Thank you, sir. – Rega Planar 1 My budget is ~£550-650. So, I guess that it is a genuine hybrid desire … if pushed, I’d like to say the single room sound quality … but the internet networking adaptability is important too (I have a fair few quite grown up kids that would like to be able to take advantage of that side too! If you have any concerns – have a chat with your dealer. As I noted I currently have no amp or speakers so need to focus on getting these in place before upgrading the turntable. I lucked into a nine month old Rega Brio that the guy was selling at half price so he could get some $3000 amp he just had to get. Your thoughts pretty much got me off the fence on my decision, and truthfully I think I was leaning in that direction anyway although I wouldn’t admit it. They offer great value, though and the Onkyo amp modules are decent. Ken, Hi Paul, Or are the TT of Thorens not at same quality of Rega? Much appreciated. I assume you’ll be wanting 3m of the stuff and plugs fitted at the ends. How about Wi-Fi? Or should i buy another amplifier if i want to enjoy good quality sound of my venyl? Thanks for your time! If vinyl is important to you considering the rest of your hardware, I’d say the Rega is hardly sufficient. I will take a look for those speakers. Hi Paul, If you can afford the Brio then I’d advise getting it because you’ll experience enhanced sound. As the days go by, it opens up more and more and the level of detail is just amazing. Yep, go for it. Thank you so much for your tips and all the knowledge you’ve shared, truly amazing. Not with you – with anyone else but not you. You are an absolute fountain of information, your videos (which I just happened to come across by chance on youtube later in the day after reading this article) are great too. That said, if money is very tight and will be for a while then got for the ‘1’ and buy the rest now. Thanks for your question. Are you writing from the USA? Will the listening experience be annihilated by using the Sonos instead of a ‘regular’ amp + speaker system? James. If you want to move away from this sound type and go for something more audiophile then I would slowly upgrade the lot but begin at the most important part, the source and the turntable, then work through the chain to the phono amp, then the amp, dump the mixer and then the speakers. Well here’s the nifty part, armed with my credit card, I click on the local audio shop’s bookmark I had for the Rega a few weeks ago and low and behold, all the Rega gear is on sale! Hi Ignacio – it all depends on your budget, really. After reading your review of the Planar 1 I am sold and picked one up on sale for $399CAD. Rega Fono to be added at a later date. Possibly a stupid question but do I need to buy 2 of these since there are 4 sockets at the back of the phono amp? Hi Paul, just stumbled upon your great review. Thanks again Paul for the information. I really don’t want to go on that road with infinite upgrades and stuff, ideally i’d be buying a decent turntable and forgetting about it for a couple of years, just enjoying the music (of course i know it wouldn’t happen). The other thing i seen was Concept Center speaker as further upgrade down the road to use with the TV setup and the concepts but if sticking with Muso for TV then not needed i guess. Some people have done some pretty hacky things that I’m not going to get involved in. Or just speakers? Why do you use the M2TECH? That will lower vibration. I even want to stretch my budget with €200-300. The rest of my set-up is a Cambridge Audio 640 A Azur V.2 amp and a pair of Spica TC 60 (difficult to find now as the company went out of business some years ago). Firstly – thank you for an excellent site especially the reviews – very clear easy to read and understand ! This Rega Planar 1 grabbed my attention. And yes, that built-in amp does produce high-frequency noise. The receiver sits in my home office with digital media such as an Apple TV, PS4 and AirPlay delivering the goods. This is all a bit compromised by many years of family life and my old (and, to be fair pretty budget) HiFi separates being reprioritised to the back of the cupboard to the extent that I’ve lost the turntable, and the Sony amp (TA AX220) is pretty ceased up (certainly the left/right slider is very dodgy) … and I’m basically left with a pair of Mission 760i speakers. A Project RPM 3 turntable might be a better option for you, in that case Quilly. I have recently upgraded the Planar 1 with the Rega Performance pack which includes the Bias 2 cartridge. That said, don’t forget, what you’re not seeing are the many more Rega uses who do not have problems. Don’t forget, you can always upgrade again in a few years time when more funds are available. Ok im happy with that, i have tested out the muso via blue tooth as awaiting a good optical cable but sounding good for the TV. The new Planar 1 is the most user friendly Rega turntable to date. I’m rediscovering the vinyl myself and I have been an audiophile for quite some time now. That would be the safest and best option in terms of sound. Another middle age guy here looking to enjoy his old vinyl. Not a problem, Dina. I therefore figured a good looking, quality, budget turntable would suffice as a replacement. I have heard, more recently, that the Rega with a taller cart works fine without spacers and, for a turntable at that price, all of this spacer malarky is not what it’s cracked up to be. I began with Ella Fitzgerald’s version of the Sinatra classic, One for My Baby. Thanks, Marc. A Goldring E3 is another option: https://theaudiophileman.com/goldring-e3/ It’s packed with veiling noise-related kit for a 2-channel vinyl system. 1) i see ,also, that rega’s wire its not so good as i could exspect. Both would be ideal. The Music Hall is a reworking of a Pro-Ject template and is also excellent in sound terms. I'm considering returning it. The 6000CDT from Audiolab and the best DAC you can afford (iFi? This will give you a purer sound (the more boxes in between you and the sound, the more chance you have of degrading the sound) and you might just hear something too Don’t forget to watch the volume knobs on the front of the speakers too, of course. They’ll be waiting, if you change you mind. An automatic speed changer will eat up a chunk of the build budget meaning that sound quality will suffer. If the budget is low I would suggest looking at eBay for a second hand model. Meticulously designed with improved performance in mind, the Planar 1 just may live up to that proclamation. No, I haven’t tried that yet. Grab the best QED cables you can afford from Amazon, price follows performance with the QED range. I should also probably add that I have a fair few older children that like the idea of music on demand in different places too! Thanks a lot as always for your sound advice. speaker help. The problem is that there are no input sockets on the HK – as they were originally designed for multimedia use they have a hard-wired cable with a 3.5mm jack that connects to the output of a laptop or mp3 player, so I am wondering what the best way is to connect this to the pre-amp. Hi Paul, i have enjoyed reading this review. I’d messaged Rega about it this morning too and they said as long as the cartridge isn’t dragging it should be fine. If cash is tight, though, the Mani is a top quality choice. This is a built-in phono amplifier. Is it sound quality or convenience? Rega cuts this step out. I thought I might be able to plug this into an Onkyo / Topaz amp to tick the Bluetooth box for a low price…? This is a very lightweight and cheaply-made turntable. If you can demo them, then I would heartily recommend that before you buy. ): a new Rega Planar 2 for €.480. I know that your motto is to buy the best you could and, also, “start from the beggining” but maybe with the difference in price between the two I can buy the PLANAR 1 and afford another thing with the difference but I want to make sure that I am not letting the oportunity to buy the PLANAR 2 as I don’t intent to renew the set-up for a long time (and I live in Argentina :)) Prefer more power in reserve than any of the Rega Planar 1,!
